The Statue of Liberty

NYC 🇺🇸

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty, also known as the Liberty Enlightening the World, is a massive neoclassical monument located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The monument was sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel as a present from the people of France to the people of the United States in October 28, 1886.

The statue is a figure of Libertas, a Roman liberty goddess. Her left hand holds a tabula imprinted with July 4, 1776, in Roman numerals, the date of the United States Declaration of Independence

After its dedication, the statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States, seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.
