SAN JUAN
San Cristóbal Fort
San Cristóbal Fort is a stronghold in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and it was constructed by the Spanish to protect San Juan from land-based invasions.
This castle was named in honor of the Spanish triumphs that drove English and Dutch settlers off the island of the same name in the Lesser Antilles.
Castillo San Cristóbal is the biggest Spanish fortress erected in the New World. When completed in 1783, it comprised around 27 acres of land and partially ringed the city of San Juan.
The fort has five cisterns that were utilized for water storage during the Spanish colonial era, and they are so spacious that they were also utilized as bomb shelters during the Second World War.
