This São Jorge Castle ticket gives you self-guided admission to one of Lisbon’s most important historic monuments, with the option to add an English audio guide through an app. The recommended visit takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes and begins at the Arco do Castelo. There is no live guide or meeting point, so you can move through the fortress, museum, ramparts and viewpoints at your own pace.
São Jorge Castle stands on one of the most strategic hills in Lisbon’s historic centre, overlooking Alfama and the Tagus. Although people occupied this hill long before the Middle Ages, the fortification visible today is principally connected with the Islamic city of the 11th century. Portuguese forces led by Afonso Henriques captured Lisbon in 1147, after which the fortified hill became closely associated with the monarchy and the development of the medieval city.
The visit is therefore much more than a panoramic stop. Eleven towers survive within the fortification, stairs lead onto sections of the ramparts and the onsite museum displays objects recovered from the castle hill. Depending on the time of your visit, you may also be able to join the castle’s Camera Obscura presentation, an optical system that projects a live 360-degree view of Lisbon.
If you select the ticket with audio guide, the English commentary accompanies the self-guided route through an app. The standard ticket does not include a walking tour of Alfama, Lisbon Cathedral, Santa Luzia or Portas do Sol. Those places are nearby and can be explored independently before or after entering the castle.
How the São Jorge Castle Ticket Works
This is a self-guided attraction ticket rather than a guided city tour. There is no group meeting point and no English-speaking guide waiting outside the monument. Instead, the visit is designed to begin at the Arco do Castelo, where you enter the historic complex and explore independently.
Civitatis currently estimates approximately 1 hour 10 minutes for the visit. You are not required to follow a guide’s walking pace, so the amount of time you ultimately spend inside can depend on how long you remain at the viewpoints, museum and fortifications.
When booking, pay close attention to the option selected. Admission to São Jorge Castle is included, while the English audio guide is included only with the corresponding audio-guide option.
The audio commentary is delivered through an app rather than a physical live guide. Make sure your phone has enough battery for the visit and follow any download or activation instructions supplied with your electronic voucher.
The booking is currently non-refundable, so choose the date carefully before confirming. Reduced tickets for certain age groups are handled separately by the monument and may not include the Civitatis audio guide.
The Castle, Ramparts and Towers
An Islamic Fortress Above Lisbon
The history of this hill stretches back far beyond the structure you see today. Archaeological evidence shows human occupation over many centuries, including communities from the Iron Age and Roman period.
The castle itself, however, is fundamentally associated with the Islamic city that occupied Lisbon during the Middle Ages. The fortification was developed around the mid-11th century as part of the defended urban centre overlooking the Tagus.
In 1147, Afonso Henriques and the forces participating in the conquest of Lisbon took the city from Muslim rule. During the following centuries, the fortified hill became increasingly associated with Portuguese royal power and the medieval development of Lisbon.
The earthquake of 1755 and subsequent changes to the city altered the complex considerably. Large restoration campaigns during the 20th century helped create much of the castle appearance experienced by visitors today.
Eleven Towers and the Wall Walk
São Jorge Castle preserves eleven towers with architectural characteristics associated with medieval military fortification. Stone stairways built against the curtain walls give access to ramparts and towers, allowing visitors to walk much of the fortified perimeter.
These elevated sections provide a clearer sense of how the defensive system worked. Instead of seeing the castle only as a collection of stone walls, you can follow the relationship between towers, courtyards and the steep slopes surrounding the hill.
Access to the wall walks and towers can close before the rest of the monument for safety reasons, particularly as daylight fades. If climbing the ramparts is important to you, avoid leaving that part of the visit until the final minutes before closing.
Views Over Alfama and the Tagus
The viewpoints are one of the strongest reasons to visit São Jorge Castle. From the elevated grounds you can look down across Alfama’s dense rooftops, the central districts of Lisbon and the Tagus estuary.
The view also helps explain the strategic value of the site. Control of this hill meant visibility over the surrounding settlement and important approaches to the river, which was essential to Lisbon’s development as a defended port city.
Museum, Camera Obscura and Archaeology
The Castle Museum
The castle museum displays objects discovered within the former fortified settlement and royal precinct. The collection covers many centuries of occupation, from communities living on the hill in antiquity through the medieval and early modern periods.
Particular attention is given to Lisbon during the 11th and 12th centuries, when the hill formed part of the Islamic city. Ceramics and other archaeological material help explain everyday life behind the walls rather than focusing only on warfare and rulers.
Camera Obscura
The Ulysses Tower contains a Camera Obscura, an optical system of lenses and mirrors that projects a live image of Lisbon onto a viewing surface. During the presentation you can observe monuments, streets, the river and other parts of the city in real time through a 360-degree view.
Access is through short guided sessions organized by the castle and included with standard admission. Places are limited, participation is by order of arrival and operation depends on weather conditions.
The timetable changes throughout the year. If the Camera Obscura matters to your visit, check its operating hours when you arrive rather than assuming it will be available throughout the entire castle opening period.
Archaeological Site
The archaeological area preserves traces of several phases of occupation on the hill, including remains connected with the medieval Islamic settlement and later uses of the fortified precinct.
Access to this area is more restricted than circulation through the main castle. The monument currently links entry to participants in its own guided discovery visit, which is included with castle admission but operates according to an onsite schedule.
Opening Hours, Accessibility and Practical Information
São Jorge Castle currently opens daily from 9 am to 9 pm between March and October, with final admission at 8:30 pm. From November through February it opens from 9 am to 6 pm, with final admission at 5:30 pm. The monument closes on selected public and holiday dates, so check the official schedule before visiting.
Access to ramparts and towers can finish earlier than general admission for safety reasons. This is particularly relevant late in the day, when reduced daylight can limit access to elevated sections of the fortification.
The castle provides several accessibility measures for visitors with reduced mobility. There is an accessible route from the entrance to the eastern viewpoint, a ramp at the museum entrance, an internal lifting platform, accessible toilets and wheelchairs available onsite.
These measures do not mean that every tower, stairway and section of the ramparts is step-free. If you have specific mobility requirements, contact the monument in advance so staff can explain the most suitable route.
Pets are not allowed with the Civitatis ticket. The monument does welcome guide dogs. Your Civitatis voucher is electronic and can be carried on your phone.
