Rockefeller Center

NEW YORK CITY 🇺🇸

Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center is a large complex in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, consisting of 19 commercial buildings spanning 22 acres (89,000 m2) between 48th and 51st Streets. The 14 original Art Deco buildings commissioned by the Rockefeller family span the area between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, separated by a large sunken square and a private street known as Rockefeller Plaza. Later additions include 75 Rockefeller Plaza, located at the north end of Rockefeller Plaza across 51st Street, and four International Style buildings on the west side of Sixth Avenue.

Columbia University, the site’s then-owner, leased the land to John D. Rockefeller Jr., who was the driving force behind the complex’s construction, in 1928. The current Rockefeller Center was built after the Metropolitan Opera could not afford to relocate to the proposed new building. It was originally envisioned as the site for a new Metropolitan Opera building. Before the current plan was approved in 1932, various plans were debated. Rockefeller Center construction began in 1931, with the first buildings opening in 1933. By 1939, the complex’s core had been completed.
